A Year In Review: 4 Journal Prompts to Help You Use What You Learned in 2018 to Make 2019 Your Best Yet

I think it is so valuable to take some time contemplating the year that has just past and seeing what can be learned and what that means for the year ahead. Not to learn from what you’ve experienced in the past year would be a waste! I decided to share with you the review I am doing in my own business, in case it is the inspiration or motivation you need to do the same.

Hey Hey!

It is easy at this time of year to just get so excited about the new year and what it holds for us.

But –

I think it is so valuable to take some time contemplating the year that has just past and seeing what can be learned and what that means for the year ahead.

Not to learn from what you’ve experienced in the past year would be a waste!

I decided to share with you the review I am doing in my own business, in case it is the inspiration or motivation you need to do the same.

I’d love to invite you to join in!

1. WHAT WENT WELL AND WHY?

When you look back over 2018 it’s easy to focus on what you would have changed or what didn’t go so well.

But I think it’s great to start with what DID go well.

Make yourself a list, not just what went well, but what FELT good and dig into the reasons WHY these things happened.

Those are some of the things you likely want to repeat, right?

If a strategy worked well for you, is it time to double down your efforts on that?

If something you did just made you feel amazing, is it time to include more of that in your biz or life?

When you’ve written your list, spend some time just soaking in the good vibes and congratulate yourself on your successes.

As my private coaching clients will tell you –

Celebrating successes is mandatory on my watch! 🙂

2. WHAT DIDN’T GO WELL AND WHY?

Now this one comes with a stern message –

This is NOT about beating yourself up and feeling bad.

This is about taking an honest look at what worked for you, and what didn’t but also trying to glean from those things the reasons WHY they didn’t work so you can decide if you need to change how you were doing things or change your plan.

For example, perhaps your sales plan didn’t work out. Why was that?

Was it because your strategy just really didn’t work for you or your business?

Or was it because you lack confidence in selling and didn’t really show up and take the action you know you need to, to make the plan work?

Don’t see any of these things as “mistakes” but embrace the fact that entrepreneurship is a voyage of discovery with lessons to learn the entire way.

3. SPOT THE TRENDS

When you’re looking back over 2018 in your business, see if you can spot trends.

Were there certain points of the year that went really smoothly?

And others where you felt overwhelmed?

Business and life are full of peaks and troughs.

We can’t expect smooth sailing, things staying at the exact same pace indefinitely.

Also, that would be so boring! #yawn

For example, did you find the school summer break a massive challenge in terms of juggling family needs and your business?

Notice these trends and then make a plan to better ride the highs and put in place the support or systems you need ahead of time to help you through the dips.

4. WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE?

You know that saying,

“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results” by Albert Einstein?

Well it is amazing how often I see people doing precisely this in their business

And it keeps you stuck.

So if you’re looking to attract more clients or make more money or enjoy more time freedom in 2019…

Whatever you’ve decided you want –

Think about what will need to CHANGE to get you there.

For example, if you’ve been afraid to invest in your business in 2018

And kept telling yourself “when I can just make some more money, I’ll get that support I need”

Then notice what this is: a trap.

We so often tell ourselves these “when [thing we want happens] THEN I’ll finally do [thing we think is important]”.

But we get that the wrong way around.

Often we need to DO the thing we think is important FIRST in order to have the thing we want.

So in this final part of your review of 2018, take a look back at what worked, what didn’t and ask yourself:

What needs to change?

  • What needs to change to help you show up in a bigger, bolder way for your business?

  • What needs to change for you to make more money?

  • What needs to change for you to create more time freedom?

These are some of the questions I’m asking myself 🙂

I hope you’ve enjoyed this YEAR IN REVIEW.

I’d love you to let me know which of the prompts most resonated with you.
